Bully Prevention Program

This program is available in English and French

Aims to reduce the level of physical and emotional aggression within schools by implementing a comprehensive community-wide approach to increase knowledge, skills and resources. This program brings together the entire community, including parents, police, resource centres, business leaders, school personnel, and most importantly young people.

The Bully Prevention Program offers:

  • In-school curriculum-based program for grades JK to grade 8, involving students, teachers, principals and parent councils.
  • Community talks to address the issue with both community members (parents/care providers) and service providers.
  • "Train the Facilitator" opportunities for service providers interested in our program.

We serve:

  • School-aged children residing in Goulbourn, Kanata and West Carleton.
  • The entire school community, including: school personnel, parents, students and community members.

We are pleased to announce that the Ontario Ministry of Education has included the "Be a Buddy, Not a Bully" program in the Registry of Bullying Prevention Programs, which provides Ontario educators with information about bullying prevention programs which may be suitable for use in elementary and secondary schools. The WOCRC’s "Be a Buddy, Not a Bully" program received a perfect score on the classification checklist. Thanks to a partnership with MDS Nordion, the Western Ottawa CRC is expanding the program to include a preschool, secondary school and a workplace model.

Confident Children's Program

This program is available in English and French

                                         (not currently offered in French at the WOCRC)

Group Program for children aged 6 – 11 offering a wide variety of topics, including social skills, self-esteem, friendship, anger, and separation & divorce. Concurrent Parent Groups offered to support parents in reinforcing skills learned by children in their groups. Includes a School Program that offers class workshops.

The Confident Children's Program offers:

  • Groups for children:
    • Separation and Divorce
    • Girls Self-Esteen
    • Getting along with others.
  • Groups are offered Fall, Winter and Spring terms.
  • Groups are offered one evening a week for 1 ½ hours.
  • A parent's group meets at the same time as the children's group. The children's group is only a small part of the child's day to day experience, it is important for parents to become involved in the process so that they can continue to encourage building skills the child has learned about.
  • Confident Children's groups are also offered in ourlocal schools and in partnership with the classroom teacher.

Confident Children's Program Goals:

  • To teach children the skills necessary to understand, talk about, and cope with their life circumstances in healthy and positive ways.
  • To build children's self-esteem and a sense of trust through relationships with caring adults in a safe environment.
  • To influence the home environment by offering concurrent parent's groups where the skills being taught to the children are shared with the parents.

Children's Community Development

This program is available in English

The Western Ottawa Community Resource Centre has a Children's Community Developement Team that works with local individuals and community groups to identify existing needs or issues involving children in our community and to help develop and coordinate services. The Children's Community Developers are responsible for addressing the needs and concerns of families, in supporting the coordination of pre-school and school-aged services in Goulbourn, Kanata and West Carleton.

Children's Community Development activities include:

  • Empowering families, and encouraging and supporting community members to identify needs, develop strategies, as well as provide education related to child development and parenting issues.
  • Working with numerous community groups to enhance problem-solving skills and improve the health and well-being of children.
  • Creating an opportunity for community members to come together to take collective action and generate solutions to common problems.
  • Linking service providers to collaborate on services and link community members to service providers.
  • Providing assistance to individuals and community groups by working with them on social issues and concerns. Support them in engaging within their community, whether it is community education, advocacy, outreach or health promotion.
  • Helping community groups to develop new programs for children or expand existing programs for children.
  • Community members know best what their children's needs are. With their participation, change is likely to be more effective, on-going and meaningful.

Child Witness Program

A program for children who have witnessed women abuse.  This program is available in English.

The Child Witness Program offers:

  • Support groups for children ages 6-11 who have witnessed woman abuse in their homes. Children learn ways of coping through discussion, videos, crafts and activities.
  • A group for mothers is offered at the same time, offering education, support and a link to what their children are learning.
  • Short-term counselling

We serve:

  • Residents of Kanata, Goulbourn and West Carleton wards, as well as residents from areas served by the Community Resource Centre of Nepean, Osgoode and Rideau and Pinecrest-Queensway Health and Community Servies.
  • Children ages 6 – 11 who have witnessed woman abuse in their homes.
  • Children whose mother has left or who is still with her partner.
  • Children residing at Chrysalis House and the Carling Family Shelter.
