Volunteer Opportunities
Services for Seniors and Adults with Physical Disabilities
Adult Day Program
Provide assistance, companionship and encouragement in a group setting for adults with varying degrees of dementia and Alzheimers to help them achieve and maintain their maximum level of functioning, to prevent premature and inappropriate institutionalization and to provide respite for caregivers. Components of the service include planned social, recreational and physical activities, meals, and companionship. Must be age 15 or older. Requires availability from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Diner's Club
To assist in hosting a hot catered lunch and social gathering for older adults who have difficulty getting out on their own. Must be age 15 or older. Requires availability from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Meals On Wheels – Driver
To pick up and deliver hot and/or frozen meals to older adults and people with disabilities. Requires daytime availability. Volunteers are eligible for an expense reimbursement of .40/k.
Transportation – Drivers
- Drivers are required for daytime transportation of seniors and people with disabilities to medical, legal or counselling appointments. Requires daytime availability. Volunteers are eligible for an expense reimbursement of .40/km.
- Drivers are required for daytime transportation of seniors and people with disabilities to non-medical appointments, such as shopping, banking, etc. Requires daytime availability. Volunteers are eligible for an expense reimbursement of .40/km.
Ontario Early Years Centre - Carleton
Drop-In Program
Assist with day-to-day activities of the drop-in program, including set up and clean up. To assist in making participants feel welcome and comfortable. Requires daytime, evening or Saturday availability.
Toy Library
To assist with the loading and unloading a half school bus at each stop (items are not heavy just awkward), in all types of weather. Sign toys in and out, maintain a computer inventory, repair toys, and help families with selection. Requires daytime or Saturday availability.
Children's Programs
Homework Club
To assist students with their homework, by providing a safe and quiet environment. Volunteers will be assisting the Homework Club Tutor. Students are attending elementary schools. Volunteers are required for 2-3 hours per week in the evening.
Violence Against Women Services
Peer Support Program
To provide support to women who have been abused by an intimate partner. A variety of Peer Support volunteer roles are available in the community and within Chrysalis House, a shelter for abused women and their children.
After an initial screening process, then an extensive training, Peer Supporters provide the following supports:
- accompaniment to legal, medical and counselling appointments, supporting individual women through regular contact with that woman, assistance in our child and youth program, respite childcare, assistance with household maintenance, organizing of donations, and other assorted tasks as required.
- The Peer Support Program is committed to working towards ending violence against women by developing and implementing public education initiatives.
Resource Development
Administration
Provide assistance to the Western Ottawa CRC in the form of mailings, data entry and other various office duties. Daytime availability is required.
Public Relations & Special Events
To be a representative of the Western Ottawa CRC at community events, information booths, etc. Also, to assist in any and all aspects during CRC special events.
Millennium Learning Centre
Mentor
To volunteer contact the Millennium Learning Centres at mlcvol@ncf.ca
Volunteers provide one-on-one support and mentoring to new computer and Internet users and give workshops on the use of computers, the Internet and job searching. Millennium Learning Centre's (MLC) are small user-friendly sites where people can learn to use computers and the Internet in a supportive atmosphere. Must be age 16 or older and be familiar with computers and the Internet.
The Western Ottawa Community Resource Centre is an MLC site. Volunteers for this program are recruited and trained by MLC staff. If you are interested in this program you do not need to fill out the Western Ottawa CRC application. Instead, please contact the Millennium Learning Centres at mlcvol@ncf.ca
Chrysalis House
A 25 bed shelter that offers safe, short-term emergency shelter to women and their children fleeing abuse.
The Volunteer & Community Education program aims to increase the community’s knowledge of violence against women issues. The program also aims to increase volunteer opportunities to support the growing and diverse needs of the shelter and the women we serve. Opportunities open to all genders.
After an initial screening process, interview, and appropriate training, Chrysalis House volunteers are able to participate in various roles such as:
